A bold exploration in the world of street fashion
On October 16th, INXX debuted the 2019 S/S “INphase” series at Shanghai Fashion Week. “INphase” is an expression used to describe aesthetic elements or pieces that ‘do not contradict each other’.
The series is a bold mixture of traditional culture and avant-garde, experimental designs. The show began with humming sounds played by ancient musical instruments, which then led to the unveiling of the three collections by INXX for SS19: “PARAMITA”, “Five Elements” and “TOPOLOGY”.
“PARAMITA”, “Five Elements” and “TOPOLOGY” — these three collections embody the spirit of the ‘INphase’ series; the “PARAMITA” collection was also featured in the INXX SS19 Master Collection, which was shown at New York Fashion Week.
PARAMITA: PARAMITA means to “approach the other side” in Buddhism, the other side being “enlightenment”, which is being approached from a place of “confusion”; there are six ways to achieve PARAMITA: giving, restraint, tolerance, self-improvement, zen, and wisdom. The story of INXX SS19 was inspired by these “Six True Words” of Buddhism. The collection employs the use of traditional garments which are mix and matched with wild and eccentric graffiti art. It also ingeniously combines the calligraphy of Elder Ching Qing, a master of Chinese Buddhism, and the Zen-styled paintings of Master Kong Yi of the Ben Pu Academy. Together, this mixture of inspirations and textures bring about a balance between Eastern and Western cultures.
Converse collaborated with INXX to bring a re-invented iteration of the classic silhouette, giving timeless sneaker a fresh new look. INXX also debuted their first sneakers, called the Hyperion.
The liberal use of tie dye and graffiti formed the personality of the “PARAMITA” collection. The collection blends the styles of graffiti and street art with traditional totem patterns to bring about a unique and innovative look.
“Five Elements”: The transition from the “Six True Words" to “Five Elements” represents a shift from the use of “combination” to a focus on “connection”. The five elements represent the truth of nature and the origin of all existence.
This collection took inspiration from the five classical elements in traditional Chinese culture. Through connecting different these elements in unusual, yet cohesive ways, the collection brings an unexpected visual experience that is both classically inspired but introduces new shapes and ideas.
"TOPOLOGY": Inspired by the Utopian architectural history of the 1960s, this collection uses different architectural languages such as color, texture, appearance, and structure and translates them into the language of fashion. The collection also reflects the living environments of certain ethnic tribes from that time and uses raw materials from the street as part of its design language, transforming the human body into a “mobile street”.
The “TOPOLOGY” series attempts to outline the history of “Utopian” architecture and its ecology by closely following this “Utopian” design language. Together with the “PARAMITA” and “Five Elements” collections, “TOPOLOGY” creates a complete picture of the ‘INphase’ concept. At the end of the show, the models remained stationary, imitating the “stillness” of architecture and further reflecting the concept of “TOPOLOGY”.
The phrase "INphase” challenges many established modes of design, and narrows a multitude of concepts and techniques into a three part series. The structure of the collection was conveyed through the language of fashion design, further exploring the ‘INphase’ concept.
After journey, Li Xican, and many KOL’s and members of the fashion media were invited to INXX’s runway show to get an exclusive first look at the 2019 S/S “INphase” collection.
